The term "mental illness" is confusing here. I have an unpublished paper (as a client/survivor)HERE which indicates that "madness" is a better usage. There is an underlying issue of "the nature of science" which is engaged in Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions." When we understand that concern, we can distinguish "alchemy" and "chemistry" better, for instance; parallel concerns obtain (as Stu said here) in regards what is known as "social science."

Mental illness is not caused by the body or brain; it is caused by unhealthy socia relationships. Psychiatrists will continue to do harm because they don't acknowledge that.
