Beyond "weird," the psychological need would be to develop the critical way to engage structural violence, to bring in the role of sensitivity, of compassion - there is value in changing the character of the discussion.
Yes, something weird happened with all this, but I'm not sure what it was. Harpers hid the two page article behind a firewall, and Horton (or Harpers editor) submarined the Seton Hall report or reference to it.
I am pretty sure the intel agencies have interfered with the anti-torture movement somehow. I don't know how much, and can't prove it anyway. Some of the problems are the result of competing political agendas, cliquism, big egos, organizational agendas, etc.
