Web Page Upload Instructions
SEPTEMBER 2007 VERSION

Ochre Star

  1. This assumes you are starting with a document formatted using an Office 2003 application. It should be saved with an extension like  .doc, .xls, .ppt, or .mdb
  2. There are general procedures regarding web files created by Office 2003. In particular, any file that is not a simple text file will save automatically a folder of support files with a machine-constructed matching name. A file saved as  mystuff.htm  would thus have a folder of support files named  mystuff_files
  3. To upload support files using FTP:
    1. You need a matching folder name e.g.  mystuff_files
    2. Drag the entire folder over to your website folder

Now there’s what to save & how to save it

  1. What to save.  See the File Names file for the required filenames. That file also lists what gets saved for each lab tutorial
  2. How to save.  Save onto your floppy disk

For Word 2003, it’s file1.htm through file4.htm, use ‘Save as WebPage’

For Excel 2003, it’s file5.htm through file8.htm, use ‘Save as WebPage’. Check the box marked ‘Publish’ and follow the Wizard. Thus:

    • Item to publish — Entire Workbook
    • Publish as filename —
Browse, find the  a:  drive, add the filename from File Names file above
    • Click on ‘Save

For PowerPoint 2003, it’s file9.htm through file12.htm, use ‘Save as WebPage’. Here the problem is you create a large number [100?] of support files .. but they are all in a folder with the usual filename ending in _files

For Access 2003, it’s file13.htm through file16.htm, use ‘Export’. In the dialog box, do ‘Save as type’ HTML Documents with the filename from the table below, then ‘Export All’

  3. Now, for the upload itself
  4. Log in to the website folder using FTP
  5. Drag the file you wish to upload into the website folder. Then drag the folder of support files (if there is one) over also

  6. TESTING THE SETUP:  Go to the URL (location) of your web page http://batstar.net/~yourusername and click on the link corresponding to the file you have uploaded

BE SURE TO TEST YOUR UPLOAD TO SEE THAT THE LINK WORKS!
