This project consists of the student performing a service in connection with the domain of computer information systems. This can be done formally through the campus Service Learning Project, which involves making an arrangement with a community institution. Or you may make the arrangement through the instructor if the service is connected to the class or the Department. The purpose of “service learning” is to learn through involvement in real-life working environments and therefore to learn the class material from a different perspective.

Students have found that tutoring in the public school system can be rewarding.
Tutoring for mental health clients, seniors or others is another possibility

  • This project is worth 4 or 8 points depending on the arrangements made with the instructor and the service institution.
  • Projects must involve the use of computers and performing a service in the community.
  • Projects must be arranged in writing with the instructor, and with the Service Learning Project as appropriate.

  • EVALUATION
  • Student should maintain a journal which chronicles the activities and describes the tasks performed and their relation if any to the subject matter of the course.
  • Student should submit a 1-page (3-4 par.) report by email giving an overview of what was done and evaluating how what was learned supplements the course material.
  • Student may be asked to give 3-minute presentation to the CIS 41 class regarding what was done. The presentation should stress issues relevant to class material.
  • Student should perform evaluation tasks as specified by the Service Learning Project.
