CLASSROOM CODE OF CONDUCT

Creating a proper teaching environment is the cornerstone of getting a good education. Everyone at San José City College is responsible for helping to create this environment, including students.

Simple rules of courtesy apply. Students are expected to show respect for the instructor and the other students while demonstrating academic honesty. Employers in the workplace require this courtesy, respect, and honesty as well. The community college is not an extension of high school, but a step toward higher education where students will earn the competencies and skills they will need for their future. The following are a list of guidelines for student conduct in the classroom and that apply to the workplace as well:

  • Attend class regularly.
  • Come on time and stay until class is over.
  • Come to class prepared with appropriate reading and writing materials.
  • Be a good listener while a lecture is in progress or while other class members are sharing information with the class. (This means that you should not be speaking with other students during those times.)
  • The class time and environment are reserved for students only. (No children please!)
  • Refrain from being loud, boisterous, or argumentative in the classroom.
  • Be respectful of others and do not interfere with their rights.
  • Listen and participate.
  • Use appropriate language.
  • All communication devices (cell phones, beepers, etc.) should be silent during class hours.

Lack of honesty in the classroom or the workplace is considered a serious offense. The consequences of cheating at SJCC are severe and may include the possibility of expulsion. The following would be grounds for disciplinary action:

  • Cheating on tests.
  • Turning in work that is not one’s own (plagiarism).
  • Talking or using a cell phone, PDA,or any other information or communication device during tests.
  • Furnishing false information to instructors or other college personnel.
